Our Brand Story
Nearly nine decades ago, Mr. Thurson de Silva stood on the veranda of his estate, gazing across Sri Lanka’s lush, undulating tea fields. With a cup of handpicked, estate-grown tea in hand, he made a quiet promise to devote his life to perfecting the craft of Ceylon tea.
From that moment in 1936, the De Silva legacy began to take root. Over four generations, the family has preserved and elevated Sri Lanka’s tea heritage. Thurson laid the cornerstone of quality; his son, Mr. Hermasiri de Silva, expanded the enterprise and introduced cherished traditions such as Sunday tea gatherings.
In 2000, Mr. Lushantha de Silva founded Empire Teas, carrying the business into the global while staying true to its authenticity and craftsmanship.
What began as a humble family venture has since grown into one of Sri Lanka’s top five tea exporters, delivering over 14 million kilograms of premium Ceylon tea each year under the distinguished brands Hyson, Thurson, and Akina. With operations spanning Sri Lanka, Kenya, China, the Netherlands, Spain, and beyond, Empire Teas provides complete tea solutions supported by state-of-the-art facilities, global certifications and a steadfast commitment to quality, sustainability, and flavor innovation securing its place as a true leader in the world of tea.
